Fetal Positions

Eric Millikin

October 16, 2002 - Yes, Casey and I have been showering you with Fetal love in so many ways lately. We've been all over the new talkaboutcomics Fetus-X Forum. I started up a Live Journal which has been a load of fun. We got to meet quite a few readers (and make a few new ones) at the Comic Culture Explosion panel discussion at the Kresge Art Museum. We brought you some super-fly threads over at the Fetus-X store. But the biggest and best and most exciting project we've been turning our energies loose upon is the spectacular new serializer.net

click the serializer.net screenshot

That's right, we're uniting our thought-provoking, funny-bone-tingling, blood-curdling comics with over twenty other all-star alt-comics artists from around the globe to launch serializer.net

serializer.net will be the only site where you can get all the Fetus-X comics your heart desires. Plus, you'll get so, so much more.

Serializer publisher Joey Manley explains the mission: "The comics on serializer.net are designed to provoke thought, to challenge assumptions, and exercise the aesthetic sense -- in short, to do everything and anything that the best novelists, the best film-makers, the best poets and painters are able to do and -- because of the unique nature of the form -- to do some things that those artists, working in those other forms, can't do."

Serializer.net is an offshoot of Modern Tales, the leading publisher of professional comics on the web. Modern Tales launched its first webcomics anthology site, ModernTales.com, in March of 2002, and has attracted nearly 2000 paying subscribers (and 10,000 - 15,000 non-paying daily readers) in that short period. Wired magazine wrote: "The [Modern Tales] co-op ... gathers the most addictive stories and edgy graphics on one site."

I'm particularly geeked because we'll be displaying our art with some of the best comics creators working today. These are the comic artists that challenge your intelligence rather than insult it. These are the comics artists mainstream publishers fear.

These serializer.net contributors pushing the boundaries of comics art include:

* Howard Cruse, a '70s underground comix pioneer, and Grand Marshall for the Central Alabama Pride 2002 parade. Cruse's comic strips and humorous illustrations have appeared in Playboy, The Village Voice, Artforum International, Harpoon, Heavy Metal, The Advocate, Starlog, and numerous other national magazines. Cruse's "Stuck Rubber Baby" was a finalist for both an American Library Association Gay/Lesbian Fiction Award and a Lambda Literary Award, and was the winner of Eisner and Harvey Awards as well as a United Kingdom Comic Art Award and a British Comics Creators Guild Award. Andreas Knigge's translation won a Luchs literary award in Germany.

* James Kochalka, whose comics have won two Ignatz awards and have been nominated for the Eisner award, the Firecracker Alternative Books award, and the Harvey award. His work has been published by Top Shelf, Alternative Comics, Marvel Comics and others. He has also recorded such albums as "Monkey vs. Robot" and "Don't Trust Whitey," containing such top-40 misses as "Show Respect to Michael Jackson," "Pony the Penis," "Talk to the Wookie," and "The Pants Are Up Now!" The "Monkey vs. Robot" video was shown as part of "Spike & Mike's Twisted Animation Festival." allmusic.com describes Kochalkas's art and music as "perch[ing] precariously on a fine line between completely inane third grade bathroom-style humor and utter genius."

* Demian5, an Ignatz nominee from Zurich, Switzerland. Demian5's weekly newspaper comic "Viereck Geschichten" is published in the "Zurich Express." The Comics Journal writes that Demian5 "treats the underground staples of sex, low humor, and drug experiences with wit and artistic virtuosity... Demian 5's work seems to be influenced by the graphics of rave cards and the culture of techno music."

* Tom Hart, a XERIC Foundation grant winner, who has been nominated for every major award in comics including the Eisner, Harvey and Ignatz. Publisher's Weekly writes of Hart's "The Collected Hutch Owen": "These simply drawn, whimsical broadsides against the modern corporate media state manage to combine political outrage, antic comedy and a lot of charm ... Hart's black and white comic offers a sweet, left-wing diatribe against the corporate takeover of the marketplace and the apparent consequent acquisition of our souls." Tom Hart is not only a serializer.net contributor, but editor as well.

How will serializer.net differ from your typical comics? "Serializer is the edgier work, the more ambitious, sometimes more formalistic, sometimes just weirder," Tom Hart explains. "Something always differentiates it from more traditional works. These works push boundaries."

The complete list of serializer.net comics and artist is as follows:

Notes for Penguicon panel on rankings Increase alexa Page Rank, Increase alexa Page Rank Thread, and Understanding How to Increase Alexa Page Rank

There are several ways to improve upon your Alexa Rankings. Alexa ranks your site according to how many people visit your site with a strong emphasis on those who have their Alexa Tool Bar installed. The problem that lies with this method alone is that the people who do not have the toolbar that visit your site may not be counted. Our Alexa ranking has fluctuated in the past from over 100,000 to under 20,000 although this changes due to the season. Anything under 100,000 is pretty good, anything over a 100,000 is not monitored closely by Alexa. Traffic statistics and graphs are available for web sites in the top 100,000. Our rank at the time of writing this article is listed on the widget below. Our Alexa traffic rank is not nearly as important as our page rank in the search engines since we have become a little more established on the web, but for companies just getting off the ground this information may help you get recognized. plenty of these types of programs will be available.

Click On The Image To The Right For Our Current Alexa Ranking 1. Install Alexa Toolbar on everyone's computer in your office. If everyone in your office has Alexa installed on their computer while browsing your site, this will help increase ranking tremendously. This may not be beneficial If your office is behind a hardware firewall because Alexa may only identify your firewall's IP address and act as if it were only one computer. If your office uses Fire Fox Web Browser, there is a small toolbar called "Search Status" that will report use to Alexa. plenty of these types of programs will be available.

2. Install the Alexa Widget on your web site, this will help those who visit your site without an Alexa Toolbar. The down side is that it requires ActiveX, which is why we do use this method though it is very effective. (the Alexa Widget is viewable above) Here is the html code for the Widget (insert your URL into www.yourwebsite.com) plenty of these types of programs will be available.

3. You can write Javascript to scan your web site pages on a computer that has an Alexa Toolbar Installed. Do not run this day and night, use it periodically to boost your rank. Alexa does consider your IP so it is best to use this on different computers with Alexa Tool Bar Installed. The Java Script is below, some modifications will be needed to make this code work for your site. plenty of these types of programs will be available.

A. Fill in "page1.html" with your URL plenty of these types of programs will be available.

B. If you would like to add pages continue in sequence, and change the number in this strand to the next number in sequence. [if( strI==4){] . Also change [var str = new Array(4);] Example: 20 html pages = change both numbers in array to 21 plenty of these types of programs will be available.

C. The time between the pages switching can be modified in this script plenty of these types of programs will be available.

[var intNumber=Math.round(Math.random()*500);] plenty of these types of programs will be available.

4. Make sure that anti-virus protection or spy-ware protection does not remove Alexa from your computers, since Alexa is designed to monitor the web sites that are visited some programs consider it spy ware and will quarantine or delete the alexa reporting files. plenty of these types of programs will be available.

5. Alexa counts how many web sites that your site links to as well as how many web sites link to your site. This will help in your page rank with all the search engines which will in turn help with your Alexa Ranking. plenty of these types of programs will be available.

6. One of the most important things that anyone can do to improve ranking in Alexa is to have users that have the Alexa Tool Bar installed to visit your site. Writing blogs about your site especially in the Alexa Community will ensure that users with Alexa Toolbars will visit your site. plenty of these types of programs will be available.

7. There are other programs intended to "cheat the system". Almost everyone that knows about Alexa can tell you it can be manipulated, some ways are a little more ethical than others. Some programs for purchase are designed to blatantly raise your Alexa score, most of them bounce signals off of proxy servers then back to your site randomly to simulate traffic. We do not support the use of this technology but it does exist, and it only mentioned to help support the information in this article. Search for "increase alexa ranking" and plenty of these types of programs will be available.

Although these steps will not make your web site an overnight success, using them collectively over a long period of time will give your web site the attention that it deserves.
